When Aicon first encountered Salman Toor more than a decade ago, the team was immediately captivated with an artist who was not only technically virtuosic, but who, through painting, consciously engaged in the writing of art history. At the time, Toor was a relatively fresh face on the art scene, having just graduated in 2009 with his Masters in Fine Arts from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn.

His first collaboration with the gallery took place the fall of 2009 when he was shown alongside other artists in a show titled Wound. The partnership continued to grow as the groundwork was laid for Toor’s 2013 exhibition, Happy Servant— his first solo presentation in New York. Since then, Salman Toor has had two other solo exhibitions with the gallery; Resident Alien and Time after Time, all of which you will find in this catalogue. We have presented Toor in a variety of venues across the globe including the Kochi Biennale and TATE London. Today Toor enjoys enormous popularity, with curators and critics, not to mention collectors wanting to learn more about his artistic practice as he is a prodigious talent and master of emotive figuration, using cross-cultural inspirations to great effect.
